Sharpening the saw

Image
Yesterday, I spoke about “sharpening the saw” as one of the 7 habits. And today, I’m glad to kickstart my journey in the inaugural SID-SCS Women in Tech Board Readiness Programme as part of my personal development and lifelong learning initiative.   I am impressed and delighted to be selected to join my other 26 esteemed women leaders on this journey and I look forward to learning from the program and from each other.  Thanks Singapore Institute of Directors and Singapore Computer Society for launching this program and congrats also to SID on its 25th anniversary today.  #sid #scs #womenintech #tech #diversity #director

Sorry if I’m curt and cold

☎️ Hi, is this Jene? Me: Who are you? Where are you calling from? ๐Ÿ™ Pardon me if my phone greeting is curt and cold nowadays.  80% of the calls I pick up tend to be scam calls, claiming to be from DHL, ICA or someone who claimed to be a friend and asked why I didn’t recognise their voice.  Yesterday I picked up one more who asked me to go down to a physical location to pick up something free. This sounded like those timeshare schemes which were prevailing some years ago but seemed relatively naive nowadays.    Today,  I also read this  article  on The Business Times  about how scam rates continue to increase in spite of all the education to date.  “The bait may differ – be it spoofed SMS links, QR codes, websites, calls from authorities and so on – but the pattern is the same: befuddle victims into revealing their online banking login name and password. This is why banks have such a major and critical role to play in stemming online fraud. ...

Drive-through pawnshops

This is an interesting post on a few fronts. This is especially when we usually hear more on BNPLs and banking services rather than pawnshops in the news.   ๐Ÿš˜ MONEYMAX Financial Services is deepening its presence in Malaysia, touting its drive-through pawnshops as a differentiator. By analysing #data and customer pain points, it has identified drive-through pawnshops as a way to overcome concerns of being robbed (whilst carrying lots of cash) and the hassle of finding parking.  ๐Ÿ“ˆ Not wasting a pandemic. The company has been operating in Malaysia since 2014, under a joint venture agreement. The pandemic created an opportunity for expansion, as several properties in ideal locations had been vacated.  ๐Ÿ’ป As they kept their interest rates unchanged despite cost of funds doubling and overheads increasing, their margins has suffered. Thus, to cope with rising costs, MoneyMax is investing in digitalisation that could bring efficiency gains. This means acquiring more tech talen...

Run, don’t walk

I didn’t know much about Nvidia much till last week when its big increase in share price dominated the feed. Shares of Nvidia soared as much as 30% last Thursday, adding almost $200 billion to its market value after the company shared very high revenue guidance for its AI-powered GPU chips. This morning, I watched  this clip  below and realised that success didn’t come easy indeed. He had to make so many tough choices and strategic retreats to get here. It’s a must watch to get inspired by how one can break new ground and achieve greatness by having humility, perseverance and clarity of the company vision and purpose.  These are the extracts that inspired me the most: ๐Ÿ”™Retreat does not come easily to the brightest people, yet strategic retreat, sacrifice, and deciding what to give up is at the very core of success." ๐Ÿƒ‍♀️"Run don't walk. Either you're running for food, or you are running from being food: 1. Have the humility to confront failure and ask for help. 2. E...

Path to profit paced with layoffs and single-ply toilet paper

“Business-class flights were banned; everyone would fly economy, no matter how far. Daily meal expenses were capped at US$30, hotels at US$150 a night. Snacks disappeared from offices. Sea replaced the local luxury tea brand TWG with Lipton. In at least some restrooms, two-ply toilet paper gave way to one-ply.” “We cared about every single dollar, every single cent,” Li said at his office in Singapore, his first interview in more than two years. “You can have a big dream and a big ambition, but what if you cannot survive? You always have this kind of noise back in your mind saying we may be running out of money.” “Li’s shock treatment paid off. In March, Sea reported the first quarterly profit in its 14-year history, US$427 million in Gaap-sanctioned net income. Its stock soared 22 per cent. Last week, it said it would hand out 5 per cent raises to most staff. Sea has now more than doubled its market value since November.” Sea’s path to profit was paved with layoffs and single-ply toil...
