Inspect what you expect

๐Ÿง Inspect what you expect. That’s what my ex boss taught us. And this has served me well over time as what I inspect is typically different from expected. Sometimes it’s not significant, but sometimes it’s very material. But inspecting takes a lot of time. So how do we decide when to inspect and when to trust and let go? Usually, I use these 3 tips to make a call : ⚡️ Impact What’s the impact or consequence if the outcome is different from expected? Will there be regulatory consequences? Will there be monetary consequences to business, customer or to our employees? ⏰ Timing Is there sufficient time to inspect? If not, how to sample to have sufficient assurance? ๐Ÿชจ Reliability Who prepared the work? Is the person experienced and usually delivers a high standard of work? Is the person usually detailed and reliable? Find these tips helpful? Click on the ๐Ÿ”” on my profile to follow all my posts. #work   #worktips   #career   #personaldevelopment   #jenelim

Barbie

Image
My father gave me remote control cars and other “boy” toys when young. I never owned a Barbie doll till someone passed some preloved ones when I was around 12. Hence, when the movie came out, I wasn’t sure if I could identify with it or if I wanted to watch. But as the movie has topped billion dollars at the box office, and seeing the famous speech trending online, we went to check it out over the weekend, decked out in pink of course. And yes, there were some cringy moments, but for the most of it, there were some meaningful, poignant moments by not just Barbie but Ken as well. Without spoiling it for you if you haven’t watched it, I actually liked the exchange towards the end when Ken realised that he did not have to live for Barbie but he can be his own self and he is “Kenough”. Overall, I think it’s a light hearted watch not just for girls and women but anyone who’s figuring out themselves and learning that you are good enough. Spoiler speech (if you don’t intend to watch). #barbie...

Gran Turismo

Image
I couldn’t breathe for most of the two hours. But it was exciting a ride as we learnt how a gamer made his way to real life racing in the movie Gran Turismo based on real life story. My favourite Quote from the show ๐ŸŽ️That crash is not gonna define who you are. How you respond to it … will. ๐ŸŽ️ Interestingly, this is one of the techniques I learnt in the NLP course I took many years back. A good reminder. A good movie to watch for inspiration in grit and going against the odds when no one (not even your family) believes in you. #motivation   #grit   #granturismo   #nlp   #personaldevelopment   #jenelim

What do you shy away from?

Image
What do you shy away from? Do you shy away from trying new things, socialising, public speaking, doing health checkups or exercising? And how to overcome the inertia of doing these things that you tend to shy away from ? For me, I usually practise 3 simple steps : 1️⃣ Figure out your why - identify your purpose and understand why you have to do something about it. 2️⃣ Take the first step - to avoid procrastination, do not plan it too far away and don’t think too much - just eat the frog. Start with the hardest thing and get it out of the way. As the Nike slogan goes, “just do it”. 3️⃣ Making it fun - find a friend/ community to do it together, try it in an interesting setting or gamify it. Best Blaze

Image
๐Ÿ”ฅThey say that the best blaze burns brightest when circumstances are at their worst. ๐Ÿ”ฅ- Howl’s Moving Castle Chanced into this when helping my kid to pick his favourite quote for his book review. Think it’s a good encouragement to all who might be going through difficult circumstances now. ๐Ÿ”ฅTo look on the bright side (pun intended), it’s only during tough times when we are going through the crucible where we get a chance to test our mettle and shine bright. Teacher

Image
Yesterday, I chatted with a stranger when sharing a table. She was an ex JC teacher teaching English and Literature but has now been retired in the past 13 years. ๐Ÿ›She shared with me how she always taught her students to make sure they have a decent command of English and Maths (logical thinking), but need not mug all the way and spend all their time studying. ๐Ÿ›What’s also important is to go out there and play, learn how to get along and have a network. And I think her tips work for adults at the workplace too. In my early work years, I worked very hard but forgot to have a life. Thankfully I’ve learnt along the way to have a good balance. ๐Ÿ›Don’t we all wish for a teacher like this? What other precious tips have your teachers ever given you ? #work   #student   #learning   #personaldevelopment   #jenelim

Public Speaking

Image
Public speaking can be very scary. I remembered vividly the times in my school days when I was holding the microphone and my hands were trembling uncontrollably and the heart pounding loudly.  However, through repeated practices over the years whilst  ๐Ÿ—ณ️ canvassing for votes to be faculty head or other committee head  ๐Ÿ“ฃ leading the faculty in cheers ๐ŸŽค being wedding emcee for my friends  ๐ŸŽ™️ being emcee for company events  the fear gradually subsided and public speaking came a bit more easily.  And I continue to practise now, be it speaking at webinars, seminars or panels. I also supplement with trainings as well to continuously polish my skills.  Hence, I conclude that fear of speaking can be overcome with practice and with training.  What do you think? Any other tips on how to overcome fear of public speaking?  #publicspeaking #practice #personaldevelopment #jenelim

Peel the Onion

Image
Getting to the root of a problem by investigating deeply is one of the skills that I have to use very often and one that I’m pretty good at. How I picked up the skill was the training at a young age from my ex boss who taught and required us to “peel the onion” when problem solving.  Peeling the onion means to peel the layers off one by one. And this is what allows us to get to the true understanding of the issue and take the right action to solve the problem at the root level and not at the symptomatic level (so as to avoid recurrence).  Peeling the onion regularly also means that we strengthen our skillset as a subject matter expert as we are across so much precious knowledge and details that might not be widely known.  Of course, peeling onions can make us tear. So I think having the right techniques (like asking the right questions, leveraging past experiences) can help alleviate the pain of peeling the onions.  Do you peel the onion ? And how do you peel onions ...
